Delray Medical Center has unveiled its latest CT scanning technology – the Siemen’s SOMATOM Sensation 64™ slice multi-scanner. The hospital will use the scanner to help streamline screening and treatment for coronary artery disease, offering patients a procedure that is straightforward, painless and faster than traditional coronary artery exams.
The new scanner is a combination of X-ray and computer technology that allows physicians to view cross-sections, or “slices,” of a patient’s body and obtain detailed images and data. With the new technology, physicians can directly view the coronary arteries and identify blockages or plaque formations without a cardiac catheterization, which is an invasive procedure.
“Our hospital is committed to providing innovative technologies to enhance patient care,” says CEO Mitch Feldman. “The Sensation 64™ CT scanner will give us faster, clearer results in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, all the while reducing patient testing time and radiation exposure.”
The scanner uses two X-ray projections to capture more data than single-projection machines, resulting in faster exams for patients – a great benefit for those too ill to withstand longer tests. As Feldman notes, coronary artery disease exams that traditionally could take 15 minutes or longer, now can be completed in just a few seconds.
In addition, Siemens states that the Sensation 64™ provides clearer pictures and real-time imaging of anatomy, including the beating of the heart, allowing physicians to quickly and more accurately pinpoint signs of coronary artery disease and develop treatments with greater precision.
