FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Delray Medical Center, Good Samaritan Medical Center and West Boca Medical Center, along with their corporate parent Tenet South Florida, have jointly donated $40,000 to the Caridad Clinic of Boynton Beach. The donation was made in conjunction with Tenet Healthcare Foundation.
The clinic, operated by the Migrant Association of South Florida (MASF), meets the needs of migrant farm workers who cannot afford medical care. The three hospitals will join other local institutions at the clinic for a July 15 news conference outlining their donations.
“Caridad Clinic is a savior for many hard-working laborers without health insurance,” said Tenet South Florida Senior Vice President Don Steigman. “This donation shows the commitment of the three hospitals to their community and to helping provide resources for the underserved in Palm Beach County.”
The original Caridad Health Clinic opened in 1992 in a double-wide trailer in West Boynton. Its goal was to provide free health care for needy migrant farm workers and their children through volunteer services. Today the Caridad Center has more than 500 volunteers, with the majority of its funding coming from grants, foundations and private donations.
“We estimate that we save local hospitals around $3 - $5 million a year by treating patients who would otherwise have no other option but to go to a local ER,” said MASF Executive Director Pedro del Sol.
